We all need to insure against losses of that which we value, and against potential personal and business liabilities. Why?

1. Because we cannot afford the potential financial loss.

2. Because we may be required to carry insurance by a financial insitution that holds a mortgage or loan on us, or by an owner, part-owner, or lessor of property we are buying or leasing by contract, or by a third party that allows us to occupy their land for some type of use by us. In some instances, such as the employment of staff, we may be required by state law to carry insurance.

3. Because we wish to act in a responsible way for our futures, for that of our families, and / or to those that we come in contact with, or whom we do business with and who trust us.

4. Peace of mind that comes from knowing we are well-insured.

Insure Your Horse Rescue Activities for Liability

Horse Rescue is a highly unique activity which is usually carried out by a benevolent non-profit organization, foundation, or entity, but sometimes by an individual. [We’ll refer to it here as “Rescues” or “The Rescue”] The Rescue provides or facilitates’ shelter, rehabilitation, and re-homing of abused, abandoned, neglected or surrendered horses that come into their care. Circumstances of acquisition vary, but some horses are voluntarily surrendered when the owners can no longer take care of them, and some are seized through legal proceedings because of improper care and poor condition from owners by agencies such as Animal Control, Animal Authority, County Sheriffs Department, State Bureau of Animal Protection, etc. Horse Rescues do not usually have any legal authority to investigate or intervene in animal abuse cases. For protection from liability, it is best if The Rescue is also not involved in assessments of animals that are seized. Those that may be involved with intervention, investigation, and conditions assessment are not insurable under Ark Agency’s liability insurance program.

FULL MORTALITY & THEFT INSURANCE

This is a type of insurance for your valuable exotic animals that is similar to a term life policy on a person. The Full Mortality policy insures against financial loss due to the death of an insured animal that is caused by or necessitated by both natural and accidental causes. Proven Theft coverage is also included. The animal is insured while in the Continental U.S. and Canada.

To qualify, your animals must be physically sound and in good health. A current veterinary certificate of health is usually required. Some age and value restrictions may apply.

Insure Your Horse & Equine Professional Activities for Liability

If you are a highly trained, skilled, experienced equine professional, you likely have a professional liability exposure that is not easily insured by many insurance companies. Professionals who should consider this coverage include: Horse Riding & Driving Instructor, Riding Instructor for the Disabled, Horse Trainer, Horse Training Instructor, Equine Assisted Services Professional to Licensed / Certified Therapists, Therapeutic Services Provider for Horses, Accredited Farrier / Blacksmith & Assistants, Horse Show Officials and Judges, Horse Program Fee Consultant, Horse Farm & Show Facility Design Consultant, Equine Assisted Growth & Development Services Provider, and Professional Horse Groomer.

Professional Liability Insurance does not take the place of general liability insurance, but is complimentary to it. Professional Liability Insurance does not provide important Premises & Operations liability coverage that the General Liability Policy does. Therefore, professional liability is not offered as a stand-alone policy. It is added to the general liability policy by endorsement for each qualified professional that is to be insured and who is listed in the policy by name.

If you own a horse business and your own property, it is often possible and less expensive to insure it under a package insurance program. Instead of purchasing insurance for liability and farm buildings as separate policies or with different Insurers, many farms will qualify for a single policy or Insurer to provide these coverages. The package method often provides more protection with more numerous insurance enhancement options, and will reduce the premium through package crediting. Added protections include coverage for: Credit Cards and Fund Transfer Cards, Forgery; Counterfeit Currency, Inflation Guard Coverage, Cost of Restoring Farm Operations Records, Electronic Data Processing (optional), and Extra Expense. Under these policies it is also possible to insure Watercraft, Snow Mobiles, Golf Carts, and ATV’s. You choose the coverages, a deductible, and a range of limits that are right for you, and a policy is tailored to those needs. To qualify for our programs, horses must be at least 50% of the farm operations.

History & Goals of NAHA
NAHA – NORTH AMERICAN HORSEMEN’S ASSOCIATION, a Minnesota registered organization, was founded in 1987 in response to specific needs of the horse industry which were not being met by other organizations. Founded in the midst of an insurance industry crisis which heavily hit the horse industry, it was believed some entity with expertise in both insurance and in the horse business should step forward to establish and recommend minimum risk reduction standards for the industry, based upon its most commonly occurring and avoidable accidents.

Other goals include:

To promote the horse and the horse industry.

To work for unity within the horse industry.

To establish a more reasonable and honest image
of horses and horse enthusiasts to the insurance
world and the legal profession.

To develop insurance programs that could attract
the best insurance companies available and achieve
long-term commitment from those companies.

NAHA is an informational, educational, service organization which continues to grow and expand its industry services. NAHA supports and promotes a stronger horse industry through unity. It supports other horse organizations, all breeds, and any and all constructive and humane horse uses and activities. NAHA attempts not to compete against organizations and the industry it endeavors to support and serve.

Membership fees go back to the horse industry in simple management of the organization; research to develop and update industry risk reduction standards, contracts, educational materials; awards programs, and response to industry needs and questions. The continuous input, suggestions, and support of members and associates is greatly appreciated by NAHA administrators. NAHA especially thanks members for support of the organization and those who participate in surveys, media monitoring, attorney and expert witness list development, who offer to write articles, and to those who submit suggestions and information to NAHA for review or publication.

FULL MORTALITY & THEFT INSURANCE
Available for horses, cattle, some other livestock, and dogs.
A type of insurance for your cattle that is similar to a Term Life Insurance Policy for a person.

Full Mortality Insurance will protect you against financial loss upon the death of your insured animal caused by or necessitated by both natural and accidental causes while the animal is in the Continental U.S. and Canada. Proven theft insurance is also included. Under certain circumstances and with the Insurer’s approval, insurance can be extended to animals while in some foreign countries. The Full Mortality policy pays only upon death or theft of an insured animal.

This is not a “Fall In Value” or “Loss of Use” insurance; therefore it does not insure against minor injuries, depreciation of value, nor failure of the animal to perform the duties or requirements for which it is kept or intended. Surgical and Major Medical Insurance, while not part of the Full Mortality policy, can usually be added to it, although it is not generally available for animals under six months of age or over 15 years of age.
